SERMON IN BRIEF
THEME: HOSANNA – LORD SAVE US NOW!
(JOHN WESLEY’S PRINCIPLES ON GIVING)
BIBLE READINGS: PROVERBS 11: 24 – 25; ACTS 4: 32 – 37; JOHN 12: 1 – 16
TEXT: JOHN 12:12
INTRODUCTION
Sunday is Palm Sunday! It is Sunday sets apart to celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus to Jerusalem where ‘the great crowd that had come for the Feast (Passover Feast) heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting, "Hosanna!" (John 12:12-13). This is the last Sunday of lent and ushers us to the Passion Week which starts on Monday. Do not be left out as Christ’s victory on the cross is our victory. We will sing Hosanna and shout Hosanna because we know that Jesus will save us even now! For our celebration this year, our focus will be more on John Wesley’s Principles on giving.
MAIN ISSUES
(A) HOSANNA- LORD SAVE US NOW! (JOHN 12: 12 – 16)
Hosanna means save or save now! It later became an exclamation of praise. The Lord saves and He will save us now! The great crowd took palm branches and went out to meet Jesus shouting, ‘Hosanna’ (John 12:13a). Palm branches were used in celebration of victory. As Jesus entered Jerusalem in victory so shall He enter into our lives and put all things right. We live to see His victorious hand upon our lives. Christ is able to save us. He has all the credentials to see us through – ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the King of Israel’ (vs. 13b). He is blessed so He is able to bless us and He does not only come in the name of the Lord God but He is Lord over all things. More so, He is King – A humble and peaceful King so He sat on a donkey (vs. 14; Zech. 9:9). He is the Only One who has been highly exalted and given a name that is above every name and when His name ‘Jesus’ is mentioned, every knee bows whether you like it or not (Phil. 2: 5 – 11) .
Christ knowing the victory ahead after crossing over the CROSS, He remained steadfast as Isaiah prophesied. He offered His back to those who beat Him and His cheeks to those who pulled out His beard. He ignored all mockery, shame and disgrace, knowing that God was and would be His helper. He therefore set His face like flint against all odds. God is your helper and He will not let you suffer forever. Stand firm and be steadfast in your Christian faith. Surely, 'They [enemies of progress] will wear out like a garment; and moths will eat them up' (Isaiah 50: 4 - 9) Just stay strong. May the Lord save us now!
(B) JOHN WESLEY’S PRINCIPLES ON GIVING (PROVERBS 11: 24 – 25)
Jesus Christ gladly journeyed to Jerusalem as if He was going to gain something for His personal comfort but for the sake of our eternal salvation by giving His life for us. He expects us also to give to His glory. We are unable to give or give much because we have not been confronted by the Eternal Giver who is God Himself or probably we still do not understand the essence of giving. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism had an encounter with the Lord on the area of giving. On one occasion he used almost all that he had on him to buy some pictures for his room. When later he noticed a poor woman who had nothing to protect herself in a cold winter day except a thin linen gown. He wanted to give money for her to buy a coat but he had too little left on him. He therefore came out with the following principles for money: 1. Gain all you can. 2. Save all you can 3. Give all you can. Work hard with the mind-set that you may need to help some other person(s). Save some of your income so that you can help someone in need. And in as much as you can help, help others. Give! Giving to somebody does not make you poor (Proverbs 11: 24 – 25).
(C) LORD SAVE US NOW FROM OUR INABILITY TO GIVE (JOHN 12: 1 – 8; ACTS 4:32 – 37). Give in support of God’s work. You are not the first person to give. Sometimes we complain before we give to support God’s work and faithful people of God. Remember, a family gave a dinner in honour of Jesus and in this story Mary gave an expensive perfume that worth a year’s wages (John 12: 1 - 8). Give! In the Apostles’ time, they shared what they had with others and some even went to the extent of selling their properties to help others. The result was that they had great power and much grace was upon them all (Acts 4: 32 – 37). It is not surprise the church today lacks the power and grace because we are relatively stingy. Think of it. If someone has not offered his donkey to Jesus, how would He had entered Jerusalem to fulfil prophecy (Zech. 9:9)?
CONCLUSION
The Lord saves. He gives assurance that, ‘Do not be afraid’ (John 12:15). He saves us from eternal damnation as we receive Him into our lives as our Lord and Saviour. He saves us from every situation, both mentioned and unmentioned. Rest assured, Christ is in full control. He reigns and He will surely give us victory. And as He entered Jerusalem to give His life for us, let us also work, save and help the church and all others. Hosanna! Hosanna!! Hosanna!!! March on in triumph! Give your life to Jesus.
God bless you
